Get Outside This Summer with Friends of Nevis!
From hands-on volunteering to guided nature walks, there’s something for everyone in the months ahead—and we’d love to have you along.
Volunteering: Get Stuck in & Give Back
Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis are iconic—and they need your help. Whether you're keen to get your hands dirty, connect with others, or just spend a day in the fresh air, we’ve got a volunteering opportunity for you.
- Ben Nevis Path Maintenance: Help us care for Scotland's highest mountain! Spend a day with us on the Ben Nevis Mountain Path, maintaining and restoring the ground for the 150,000+ people who walk up it every year.
- Bracken Bashing: If you'd rather spend time amongst the trees, roll up your sleeves and come along to our Bracken Bash where we'll be clearing the way for native Scots Pine to thrive.
- Litter Picking: If you fancy a more low level walk with some good company and lunch included, pop along to our annual autumn litter pick in November - often a fully booked event!
- Curling Ponds Clear Up: A festive favourite that wraps up our year of volunteering: come along in December and help us fight the frost and clear up the Glen Nevis Curling Ponds before the snow settles.

Walk & Talk Events: Explore Nature with Friends of Nevis
Friends of Nevis are hosting six unique nature events this summer and autumn—relaxed, informative walks led by brilliant professionals and passionate volunteers:
- Nature's Apothecary: A Herbal Foraging Walk & Talk (July & September): Join Clare from West Highland Herbal for a gentle walk through Glen Nevis, identifying edible and medicinal plants, sharing knowledge, and connecting with nature’s abundance. Expect a mindful pace and a welcoming vibe.
- The Language of Leaves: A Tree ID Walk & Talk (August): Want to tell an alder from an ash at a glance? Friends of Nevis volunteer, Alison will guide you through how to ID native trees using leaves, bark, buds, and habitats—perfect for curious beginners or seasoned nature-notebook-keepers.
- Hidden Kingdom: A Fungi Foray, Walk & Talk (September): Venture into the woodland at Fassfern with one of Scotland’s top field mycologists, Liz Holden. Discover the fascinating world of mushrooms and their vital role in forest ecosystems—you’ll never look at a toadstool the same way again.
- Ancient Roots: A Woodland Explore, Walk & Talk (October): Join Friends of Nevis volunteer, Rory in Glen Loy’s stunning ancient woodland, Coille Phuiteachain, to uncover the stories held in centuries-old trees and the biodiversity they support—from lichens to birdsong and beyond.
Whether you come along to one event or all four, each walk is a chance to slow down, learn, and be inspired by the incredible natural heritage of Lochaber. Browse these events and grab your tickets here!
